Ever since Miley Cyrus sliced her long brown hair off in 2010 and dyed it platinum, she’s been pretty committed to 50 shades of blonde. That’s a whole decade and then some of light-coloured strands.
But, after teasing fans last year that she was ruminating on changing her hair back to brunette, the singer just casually soft-launched her new almost black hair colour on Instagram, while ignoring the switch-up completely. Instead, her caption paid homage to Gucci’s creative director, Sabato De Sarno, and his “beautiful debut show” at the brand.
In the carousel of three photos, Miley’s dark hair blends into the black background on the first slide, but slide two gives a clearer look at her new layered, boob-length chop, which she’s styled semi-straight after favouring shaggy ‘70s textures and ’80s curls for the past few years.
Her fans were quick to respond in the comments with one writing “OMGGGGGG THE NEW ERA,” another writing “FUCK!!!!!!!! The hair is givingggggggg! Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous” and another simply posting a gif of Miley circa 2009 when she was last seen with darker hair.
Miley’s spoken previously about the significance of ditching her waist-length brunette strands when she was around 18, telling Elle Magazine that “the minute” she lost her virginity she felt the need to express herself differently, and that meant moving away from her famous Hannah Montana Disney character. “It felt ridiculous. The minute I had sex, I was kind of like, ‘I can’t put the f***ing wig on again’. It got weird. It just felt like… I was grown up,” she said in 2019.
But just before slicing and bleaching her hair, Miley first took her strands auburn, then inky brunette and loaded up on lashing on eyeliner during her Can’t Be Tamed era in 2010.
“My hair is some sort of reflection for my sanity, my sexuality, my sobriety,” the 28-year-old star previously confided in an interview on The Howard Stern Show. “The public really makes my hair, I guess, the kind of monitor of how I’m doing,” she continued.
But after some baby steps back to black, where the singer incorporated dark skunk stripes through her blonde hair, then dyed the under layer brunette, Miley has finally marked a whole new era with a fully fledged return to brunette.
We’re excited to see what this new Miley Cyrus chapter brings.
