Soft, matte cloud skin had us seriously reconsidering glossy makeup earlier this year. Now ‘cloud lips’ are set to go viral on TikTok, whether you choose Bella Hadid’s contoured iteration or smudged-out, ‘morning-after’ lips.
The timing couldn’t be better as for many, the idea of anything more than a swipe of mascara and a touch of bronzer seems like too much work in summer.
Cloud lips easily fit into this unfussy beauty aesthetic. They retain the same DNA as cloud skin with a soft-focus, hazy finish but on the lips the glow is more knocked back so that they become a true matte.
‘Cloud Skin’ is the dreamiest new beauty trend you need to know ahead of spring
It’s downright heavenly.
Applied as a stain, you can go in with your fingers to buff out the formula from the middle of your lips so the lip line is smudged out. Think kissed-off lipstick that is gloriously blurry, not messy, and makes you look like a love-struck teenager.
You can easily recreate the dreamy look with Rare Beauty’s Lip Soufflé Matte Lip Cream, which has a gorgeously lightweight, air-whipped formula. While the soft blurring effect of Nars Air Matte Lip Colour and Chanel Rouge Allure Ink Matte Liquid Lip Colour marry intense colour payoff with cushiony softness.
“Or you can create a soft, diffused, overdrawn lip,” says makeup artist Sofia Schwarzkopf-Tilbury, who used a lab sample of the Charlotte Tilbury Air Brush Flawless Lip Blur in Ruby Blur, which launches today exclusively on the brand’s new app, on Bella Hadid’s lips for Beyoncé’s star-studded 41st birthday bash.
Paired with clean skin, bronzer, minimal eye makeup and groomed brows, it became the moment. “Bella likes a diffused red lip at the top – she doesn’t like the type of harsh red lip line you get with lip liner,” Sofia explains. “Go in, starting at the centre. I like to overdraw the Cupid’s Bow for the most natural heart-shaped effect.”
Other products to have on your radar when creating cloud lips include Dior’s Rouge Dior Forever Liquid, which is ultra matte but with a bare lip feel, while Pat Mcgrath Labs Liquilust Legendary Wear Matte Lipstick is probably the most opaque of the bunch.
The cloud lip’s powdery, lip-hugging effect deserves equal consideration. It adds dimension, so even a skinny pout can look lush, plump and pillowy. Seriously, what’s not to love?
