When it comes to mani shades, the top nail artists always say the same thing: milky pink rules spring-summer, but autumn-winter is all about black cherry nails.
While the classics may be anticipated, it doesn’t make them any less stunning. That’s why a knitted roll neck and perfectly fitting jeans, or a T-shirt and blazer combo will never go out of style. Basics done well will always look polished and expensive.
Of course, we saw cherry nails taking off earlier this year, however that trend was a cutesier rendition which featured dinky cherry fruits painted onto nails for some summer nail art. Heading into winter though, things are looking a lot more sophisticated and grown-up.

What are black cherry nails?
Like the name suggests, black cherry nails mimic the colour of black cherries. They fall somewhere between a dark red and a deep purple, so within the trend you can tailor the perfect shade to your skin tone and desired aesthetic.
One of the most famous examples of a black cherry nail colour is Chanel’s Rouge Noir (which translated means red black), but there’s plenty of renditions including salon-only shades like Love Potion, Pinotage and Beauty of Perfection from Bio Sculpture. Or shades like OPI Dark Cherry Chutney or CND Black Cherry which you can get in gel form from the salon, or in a traditional nail polish to use at home, or Essie’s Bordeaux which you can pick up from Boots.
Why choose black cherry nails?
Black is a neutral that goes with everything, but black cherry adds a little extra warmth while still keeping things vampy and simple enough to work with your entire wardrobe. It tends to work beautifully with moodier autumn, winter colour palettes. It picks up on the colours of the leaves turning dark in autumn and it lends itself to festive shades while still feeling very chic.
How to wear black cherry nails?
We love the colour worn all over and extra glossy on short nails, but it can work beautifully on all lengths and we’ve also seen it remixed and applied as an accent or alongside a French tip. Below we’ve rounded up some of our favourite ways to wear black cherry nails…
