Richard Quinn’s autumn/winter 2023 show was inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, featuring his signature floral prints. To complement the theme, make-up artist Terry Barber – the director of artistry at MAC Cosmetics – wanted to emulate the soft, feminine essence of a secret garden. The colour palette included tranquil lilac, cleansing aquamarine and mesmerising silvers, while Barber decided to add to the fantasy theme with rounded, “Tim Burton-esque” eyebrows, inspired by the 1920s.
To create the look, Barber firstly prepped the skin with MAC Cosmetics’s light-diffusing Hyper Real Serumizer, creating a make-up-ready canvas. As for the base, Barber created coverage using the brand’s ultra-light Studio Radiance Face And Body Foundation. Using the MAC X Richard Quinn Eyeshadow Palette, Barber achieved a shimmery eye look, adding a delicate glossy lip to finish.
When it came to the hair, legendary hair stylist Sam McKnight brought back the sleek soft wave, which he describes as “a futuristic take on 1930s Hollywood romance”. Starting with a sharp side parting and slightly damp hair, Hair By Sam McKnight Happy Endings Nourishing Balm was applied to mid-lengths and ends, then brushed through. Hair By Sam McKnight Self Control Styling Gel was then added onto the roots and brushed down flat, before the hairline was combed into a smooth wave.
