We entrust a lot to the humble cycling backpack. Our phone, water bottle, gym clothes, lunch and laptop with all of its contents all reside in there as we weave in and out of traffic on an e-bike in the big city or over the gravel on long, rural rides. When you think about it, it should be one of your absolute priority purchases when you’re getting into cycling — once you’ve sorted a helmet, that is.
Panniers are all well and good if you’re a chill kind of guy who pootles to and from Dalston on his bike, but those among you looking at zipping around and/or smashing personal bests should be investing in a backpack instead. Most of our favourite cycling brands are in the business of engineering the most comfortable, stylish and functional baggage on a level with their cycling shorts and jerseys. At £100 or more, your backpack should be completely waterproof, spacious and comfortable to wear. Look out for ventilation to keep your back sweat-free and straps that keep as much of that weight distributed as possible.
If you’re unsure where to start looking, fear no more: below you’ll find our picks of the best, as selected by our cycling writers and editors.
