Some might call autumn cosy season, but it’s also spooky season – and it seems this has been reflected in our sleep, since ‘spider dreams’ are apparently the most-Googled dream in September. Can you relate?
According to a study by MattressNextDay, which analysed over 279,750 dream-related Google searches, there’s a significant increase in searches around spider dreams in the ninth month of the year.
The prevalence of this dream in September is not a mere coincidence, they say, after appointing celebrity psychic and dreams analyst, Inbaal Honigman, to untangle the phenomenon.
“Dreaming of spiders often symbolises a need for creativity and patience in your life,” she explains. “Spiders are often associated with creativity and patience due to their intricate web-spinning abilities. Just as these eight-legged creatures meticulously construct their webs, it may be a sign that you should focus on weaving your own creative projects or ideas together during this time. Your dreams might be encouraging you to embrace your artistic side, whether it’s writing, painting, music, or any other form of expression,” she adds.
It’s understandable that this shift coincides with “back to school” season, even if you’re an adult. Most of us are back to work after a summer of plans and trips away, so September tends to mark a moment of reflection and goal-setting. Plus, the earlier evenings drawing in are a perfect opportunity to indulge in creative projects at home, now that post-work drinks in the sunshine have been scuppered.
Martin Seeley, CEO and sleep expert at MattressNextDay explains: “The surge in spider dreams in September may be attributed to the seasonal transition. As the weather changes and daylight hours shift, our internal rhythms and sleep patterns can be disrupted. These disruptions may lead to vivid and memorable dreams, often manifesting as spiders — a representation of the uncertainty that can accompany life’s changes,” he says.
“Dreaming of spiders can also represent a need to confront your fears and insecurities head-on,” confirms Inbaal. “Just like spiders face the challenge of creating and maintaining their webs with precision, this is a time to face life challenges with resilience and determination. Pay attention to the details in your dreams for more specific insights into your unique situation,” she says.
So while spiders have a rep for being creepy little critters, a visit from one in your dreams doesn’t necessarily need to be frightening. “Ultimately, dreaming of spiders in September can be a powerful reminder to nurture your creativity, exercise patience, and confront challenges with confidence, all while weaving the intricate tapestry of your life,” says Inbaal.
